Renewable Energies in the United Kingdom

Since the 1990s, renewables have contributed to the UK's energy mix. Renewable sources now account for more than 40% of the UK's energy production, and the trend is still upward. Renewable energies play a key role in the national strategy to reduce carbon emissions.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced his intention to achieve 100% coverage of energy demand from renewable sources by 2035. However, the national goal is not only the expansion of renewable energy sources, but also a medium-term reduction of the general energy demand through more energy-saving technological alternatives.

Energy consumption in the UK was very low in 2021 and 2020 due to Covid-19. Lockdowns and other measures led to reduced activity of companies and businesses and fewer travel movements. Renewable power generation in the UK surpassed fossil fuel generation for the first time in 2020. While renewables had previously overtaken fossil fuels in the summer months, in 2020 they were the main source of electricity in the UK year-round for the first time.
